Toyota’s midsize electric SUV could come in 2WD and 4WD configurations and the latter could have a range of up to 500km
Toyota and Maruti Suzuki are reportedly working on a midsize SUV to be launched later this year. Likely based on Toyota’s DNGA platform, it will compete with Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, VW Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and MG Astor in the highly competitive segment. It would be manufactured by Toyota in its production plant in Karnataka, at least initially.
Both versions of the five-seater are expected to be powered by a powerful hybrid gasoline engine. With the midsize and compact SUV segments being very popular, Toyota and Maruti Suzuki will respond to this by introducing the second-generation Vitara Brezza, then renaming the Urban Cruiser and the aforementioned midsize SUV.
It looks like the two brands will follow the same path as they enter the electric vehicle space, as a zero-emission midsize SUV will be their first foray into this particular category around 2025. The electrified model will have larger proportions than the Hyundai. Creta, Nexon EV and it could be as similar or close to MG ZS EV.
However, it will likely be priced at Rs. 13-15 lakh (ex-showroom) range to have a competitive edge as the supply of batteries will be done domestically. Toyota is reportedly offering its version of the midsize electric SUV in both 2WD and 4WD configurations. Although it has identical specifications, the exterior proportions could differ.
This is mainly because the Maruti Suzuki YY8 and Toyota SUVs have different design languages and the latter could be modeled after the BZ4X. Toyota’s first dedicated electric vehicle is the BZ4X and is based on the e-TNGA platform. The BZ4X has sharp styling cues, a large greenhouse and a striking rear end.
The Toyota e-SUV will be based on the 27PL platform, a skateboard base derived from Toyota’s global 40PL architecture. The base 2WD version could use a single 128hp electric motor and 48kWh battery with a range of around 400km while the AWD variant featuring a twin motor setup will produce 170hp and thanks to a battery of 59 kWh, it can have a range of about 500 km.
