Tesla applies for new brand to sell its own audio gear, like headphones and more

Tesla asked to extend its brand so that it could sell audio equipment under its own brand. Does this mean Tesla has new audio products coming?

The automaker filed for a trademark in the new category two weeks ago, but it went unnoticed until an Electrek reader pointed it out to me this morning.

Tesla applied for both its “TESLA” and “T” trademarks in this new category of audio equipment:

TESLA™ trademark registration is intended to cover categories of microphones; listeners; listeners; digital audio players; sound transmitting apparatus; audio speakers; subwoofers; headphone pads; sound interfaces; audio equalizers; loudspeaker horns; megaphones.

As usual, it’s important to point out that companies sometimes ask for brands that they end up not using. That said, even if Tesla were to use this one, it’s such a broad category of brands that it’s hard to say what might come out of it.

It could be as simple as Tesla developing its own speakerphone for the interior of its vehicles and branding them with its own brand and logo or Tesla could really develop its own headphones.

In recent years, Tesla has emphasized the audio system inside its vehicles.

The Model 3’s audio system was well received by audiophiles, and that of the new Model S version also received positive reviews.

It has been compared to an expensive snap & Olufsen system often found in high-end vehicles, but for a fraction of the price.

When a reviewer made the comparison on Twitter, Tesla CEO Elon Musk commented:

Tesla sound engineers come from B&O and many other companies. They literally rock. Our system is highly programmable, so we keep improving it through OTA codec updates.

Tesla indeed has several sound engineers from Bang & Olufsen, such as senior sound engineer Markus Koch, who spent more than a decade at Harman and Bang & Olufsen before joining Tesla in 2015. He briefly left for a stint at Byton before returning to Tesla in 2019. .

More recently, Tesla has also hired several engineers from Jawbone and Amazon Lab126, where they are developing the Echo speakers.

Electrek’s Grasp

Again, Tesla could look to produce its own audio equipment for its vehicles. But then, would he need a brand for them if he only uses them internally? I do not know.

Tesla could also leverage its work developing high-end audio systems in its cars to launch other consumer products, like headphones or speakers. It’s not exactly aligned with its mission, but it’s not impossible either.

Years ago, Musk even hinted at Tesla launching his own music streaming service and they got quite far in development before scrapping the idea.
