See Tesla Model Y with potential structural pack design at Giga Texas

Plenty of Tesla Model Y electric crossovers have been spotted at Tesla’s Giga Austin and Giga Berlin factories, and we now know that at least many, if not all, of them were made at the plants that are both slated to open in a near future. .

With each new vehicle sighting at Tesla’s upcoming factories, there’s a lot of buzz on social media. However, the most recent Model Y “spy shots”, which come from a drone flyover video posted by Joe Tegtmeyer, suggest that Tesla is already building Model Y bodies that can accommodate the next structural battery pack. In related news, last week Tesla updated the Model Y owner’s manual with information related to the structural pack.

We have no way of knowing for sure if Tesla will actually start Model Y production in Texas with the structural pack and 4680 battery cells. That honestly seems highly unlikely, although several Tesla proponents suggest otherwise.

The question here is whether Tesla has enough 4680 cells to go ahead with production and delivery of Model Y vehicles with the structural pack. Maybe the company can build Model Ys with structural packs – for testing or for various employee cars etc. – while continuing to supply Model Y crossovers with the Skateboard Style Pack. Other community members also wondered if the structural pack could be designed to use Tesla’s 2170 cells.

Anyway, Tegtmeyer added a new ~30 minute flyover video to his YouTube channel on Friday, January 14, 2022 (embedded above). He also sent the following tweet:

According to a report from our friends at Teslarati, the model Y body in the picture above may be the one that will have a structural battery. The underbody area, or “floor,” of the EV is empty, suggesting it couldn’t accommodate Tesla’s traditional skateboard battery. Apparently, the current Model Y built at Tesla’s Fremont factory wouldn’t have this open space, but rather an area designed to accommodate current packs.

This isn’t the first time people have suggested that Giga Austin’s Model Y bodies might be the type designed for the structural pack. As we’ve said many times, it’s just a waiting game at this point. Let us know what you think Tesla’s plan will tie into Model Ys with structural packs from its Texas Gigafactory.
