Rose Bowl Preps: Utes seeks to grow its brand

PASADENA, Calif. (ABC4 Sports) — There are big wins and there are BIG wins. And a Utah victory over Ohio State in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day would be a defining win for the program.

Nationally, he would rank up there with the 2005 Fiesta Bowl victory over Pittsburgh and the 2009 Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama.

The Utes are four and a half point underdogs to the Buckeyes, but they know a win over Ohio State on a big stage like the Rose Bowl would help put Utah football on the map. national.

And for star Utah linebacker Devin Lloyd, he’s excited about what this game could mean for the University. “This is an incredible opportunity for the program, for the University. To be the first team to go to the Rose Bowl, you know that at the end of the day, we’re here to play a game and win a game,” Lloyd said. “So we’re going to do everything to put ourselves in the best position to win.”

“When you are a program trying to gain notoriety and make a name for yourself in terms of success. I feel like these games are really helping,” Utah cornerback Clark Phillips III said. “The Pac-12 championship helps, so we have to continue to dominate at a high level.”

“I think this is a good opportunity to show what Utah’s brand of football is,” defensive end Mika Tafua said. “It’s just a good opportunity to show it.”

“It’s very important, it’s the main reason we’re here, to win a football game,” linebacker Nephi Sewell said. “Despite all the activity, we still insist that at the end of the game, we are here to win a game.”

“You want to do something special, you want to be remembered,” Lloyd said. “To put myself in this position with everyone in the team, I can vouch for them, it’s something we will remember for the rest of our lives.”

The Rose Bowl between Ohio State and Utah begins at 3:00 p.m. on New Year’s Day.
