YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY-TV) The City of Yuma is working to rebuild Kennedy Skatepark and today the latest design will be unveiled at the City Council.
The one and only skateboard park located in Yuma needs a makeover.
“There’s really no flow to this park, it’s just bits and pieces thrown together and they said hey, it’s a skate park,” local skater Zachary Friend said.
The city hopes to change that with an updated look.
“I was really excited because in my opinion it’s a sport, an active user base that often isn’t always represented, so this park will be something that not only us as a community, could be proud, but to be honest, it will be a regional draw for everyone. near Yuma, it will be such an impressive facility,” Parks and Recreation Manager Jason Nau said.
Parks and Recreation has been working on the project since 2020 and partnered with the American Ramp Company to create the latest design.
“The design is amazing so far, better than we expected,” Friend said.
Lots of detail has gone into this sketch in hopes of giving the locals a great place to hit the concrete.
“Because the concept design was to design a skatepark where someone can go from learning to skate to developing really advanced skills, so this park is really going to be an amazing place for kids, teens and adults and on everything the all things action sport wheelbase spectrum,” Nau said.
Skateboarders believe this will be a huge improvement for the community.
“It’s going to be really cool to be like I’m from there and the design of the park looks so new,” said local skater Xzyler Benson.
It’s unclear when the reconstruction will take place, but Parks and Recreation hopes it will be next year.
The presentation begins at 5:30 p.m. today in Yuma City, and everyone is welcome to attend in person or join the zoom.
